June 2008
A year ago Brattleboro Area Habitat for Humanity (BAHFH) committed itself to constructing affordable Net Zero Energy Homes.
We are now beginning to work on our eighth house.
This home, the frame of which is from a 1940s house donated to us by Entergy Vermont Yankee, will be reconstructed in our factory in the old Book Press building this summer and fall. It will then be moved to a site on Quarry Road in Dummerston that the Nature Conservancy is donating to us. It will incorporate the technology necessary to make it a Net Zero Energy Home. Preliminary plans include solar thermal heating and solar photovoltaic electric production. We are excited about this home, because it will make us a model for other Habitat chapters and businesses all over the country.
We can’t build this home without your help.
We need to raise $60,000 to make this home a reality. We need funding for the materials (insulation, triple paned windows, insulated doors, etc.) necessary to make it a modern energy-efficient building. Please send as generous a gift as you can in the enclosed return envelope. You will assist a selected, low-income, working Brattleboro area family to acquire an energy-efficient home with an affordable mortgage.
In addition, we are seeking volunteers.
We generally have work parties on Saturdays and on Tuesday mornings. The work parties will begin in July and continue through the fall. Please call Gini Milkey at 254-2040 to volunteer. Alternately, you may visit our new website, BrattHabitat.org, and send us an email through the site.
We look forward to hearing from you and we appreciate your support.
Sincerely,
Andrew R. Cay Alexander D. Shriver Virginia A. “Gini” Milke
